Helpful tips for installing stair nosing

When fitting new stair nosing, it is important that each step is installed correctly in order to meet the Building Regulations that govern the work to ensure the final stair nosing are safe to use.

Here are some simple tips that need to be considered for installing the stair nosing:

Preparing the surface for stair nosing

The different surfaces to which the stair nosing is to be installed on will need to have a slightly different process for the preparation. Internal or external stairs may have a different material, so here are the ones to look for.

  • Concrete stairs preparation - Need to be level, no cracks, dust free and no crumbling areas.
  • Wooden stairs preparation - Dust and crack free with a smooth surface.
  • Metal stairs preparation - Clean and smooth removing all rust or debris. The metal should ideally be galvanised.

Measure stairs correctly

Measure each step separately, there may be slight differences in the measurements.

Before cutting the stair nosing

Accurately mark the measurements and check again before the first cut.

Trial fit first

Position the stair nosing in place first before final fixing. Ensure your measurements have been made correctly.

Installing the stair nosing

Dependent on the stair nosing you have chosen and the surface to be fixed to, the installation method will be slightly different. Make sure to read the right instructions before starting your fixing process.

Time to dry and harden

Leave around 1 hour for absorbent surfaces and around 2 hours for a non-absorbent surface.
